This patch was prompted by a linker warning "warning: the use of
`mktemp' is dangerous, better use `mkstemp' or `mkdtemp'" on
Fedora 36. It also fixes a few unlikely bugs and simplifies the
code in a couple of places.

Earlier versions of the code a
