which version are you using? You are quoting the docs of LilyPond 2.18
and this syntax is perfectly fine in 2.18. However, it was not allowed
in 2.16.
> \override LyricText.self-alignment-X = #LEFT
So you should always read the documentation of the version you are using.

I think it's the other way round. This syntax changed between 2.16 an 2.18.
So I assume he is usong 2.16 and reading 2.18 or 2.19.
