No.
I can answer that question, but I don't know the answer to the rest of it.

Section 11.5.1 in the 2.10 manual, 11.4.1 in the 2.11:
Under the "bugs" section, it shows how to get Lily to break when a
note hangs over the bar line. At least, that's what it _says_ it
shows--but the sample output in the manual doesn't show a break.

Lilypond-book assumes nothing about the extension of your input file.
Rename it to probe.lytex and then use lilypond-book --psfonts
probe.lytex.

How can we place an spanish letter like "ñ" or the word "alegría"?
I did tried the \char #65 thing but not even an "A" and also there were errors.
If you are using a UTF-8 aware editor, you should be able to type it
directly into the .ly file and have it appear in the output.

I tried posting the lilypond sample code, but it thinks i'm top-posting and
won't let me send. (which is odd because i see many people top-post, so it's
clearly not taboo here)
Mail sent directly to the list (rather than through the web interface)
isn't checked for "top posting". LilyPond's use
Nobody in the USA uses Old Roman or even learns it in grade school.
"Nobody" is a little strong. I knew about it :)

Assuming that there's no such file as "asdfg.ly", typing:

gives as output:

This makes it appear that the file exists (it failed, after all) but

Small caps might not work if the font you're using doesn't come in a
small-caps version--it doesn't work for me in WinXP, for example.
There's some code in the manual, at the end of 11.2.3, that fakes it.

2.7.38, section 9.2.7. The first thing discussed here in the 2.6 documentation
was how to change one element in a group, a process made much easier by the
introduction of the \tweak command (thanks!). The relevant material has been
moved into a new section, but the material now promoted to the firs
2.7.38, WinXP. (I have 2.6.4 still running on Cygwin on the same system, so that
could be the source of the problem, though I doubt it.)
Anything I typeset with a \longa duration produces:
