Follow-up Comment #8, task #6584 (project hurd): Ah, well, it's already implemented :) (though not hdXY/sdXY, but hdXsY/sdXsY/xvdXsY, the Mach naming scheme) the good point in it is that it helps using the same image between native execution and virtualization.
