gzip 1.3.9 is pretty old (dated 2006) and has known bugs.
Could you please try with gzip 1.4?
I successfully built gzip 1.4 on sparc 64-bit, and it
had no problems compressing itself. It didn't use
uucopy.

Solaris 10 - x64 is upgraded to KU_ 144489-06, gzip failed with segmentation
fault:
$ /db/bin/gzip -v snap.out.s
snap.out.s: Segmentation Fault(coredump)
$ /db/bin/truss -V
ksh: /db/bin/truss: not found
$ /db/bin/gzip -V
gzip 1.3.9
