You're right, there is still a problem. For me it works fine the first time I
run the testsuite. However, if I "touch gold/ld-new" and run "make check"
again, it fails.

Unlikely. However, I just tried to recreate your bug with current
mainline, and failed. It may have been fixed by some other change.

I tried to build GCC 4.6.0 and it failed. The error seems to come from
Binutils so I post here. Here is what I did.
Under gNewSense metad (a freed version of Debian Lenny), I first built
binutils 2.21 as follows:
cd binutils-build
CC="gcc -B/usr/bin/" ../binutils-2.20/co
