I have a varioUltra 40 and brltty5.3.x.
But I have the probleme since september 2015 with a first support in 5.2 (git).
When I write with emacs 24 or nano and all ... after some words write brltty
restart or freeze.

Can you try the latest version from Git? Dave has fixed bugs that might be
responsible for your problem.

I'm getting somewhere in my quest to integrate brltty into the sonar
linux distro. It now speaks on the live image. The problem is, the
speech is very monotone, and it only speaks long enough to speak it's
version. After this, it no longer speaks anything else. I'm wondering if
