I figured it out by reading the manual. Sorry for asking.

Hello,
I upgraded BRLTTY.
It ran make ok and then I ran make install and it installed ok.
Now when I type BRLTTY I get version 3.9 rev unknown.
On my display when I start typing or use the thumb keys I either hear
the pc speaker beep on my system or see.

after not being able to get brltty to come up on the netinst for debian

had brltty 3.7.2. I was able to start brltty after login but the
braillelite gives me mostly question marks and no legible information; I

It is normal that you need to run it as root.
Hello,
When downloading BRLTTY I noticed there was a source file (Which I used
to install) as well as a rpm file (redhat package manager I guess) I
wasn't sure what the rpm src one was for, but that's probably because I
don't use redhat.
Anyway would it be ok if I created a .deb package of BRL

You could certainly do this, but Mario has created an excellent Debian package
already. If you are running Debian Unstable, you can obtain the latest version

My status with trying to get brltty to work with the debian etch netinst
CD now turns out to be the same as that of trying to run brltty in ubuntu.
With both the debian netinst and ubuntu in x86 versions, I have no problem
with brltty. When using the corresponding cds for the powerpc
architect
Did you use the -t option?
(Don't you need to set the braille code)?
so it should be either:
from a terminal
as root
brltty -b braille_display -d /dev/port -t en_us
Or in the debian installer:
install brltty =what_display, port, en_us

No, I don't think you have to include the text table for English as the
default should be acceptable. On the x86 installer for debian etch and the
x86 ubuntu live CD, I don't have to set a table. Also the /dev isn't
necessary in the device designation. Re the tables: I actually already tried

I was already running brltty as root from ubuntu; you can't run brltty on
the ubuntu live cd except as root. But thanks anyway for trying to help.
What kind of ppc machine are you using?
