I have tried out to get a PacMate 40 working on Windows 7. I have to admit that
it is a long time ago that I used Windows, so forgive me some ignorance :).
The setup asked me whether to install two libraries. I cannot recall the two

I do believe there is also a way to have screen itself show the window but as I
recall that is at the bottom of the screen below the prompt so one may not
always read it. With the $WINDOW variable added to my PS1 line, this can be
right at the end of the p
There's a setting in Screen that will print a status line on the bottom of the
window, telling you which window you're in. I think it's called Hardstatus. I
turned it off because I found it annoying, but that might be what you are
looking for.

You cold use the WINDOW environment variable which seems to be defined
inside of screen but perhapsnot outside, you'd need to confirm this on
your own system. Then in you scrippts test whether it's defined or not
and set ps1 accordingly.

The problem of creating categories is that there is always potential
insatisfaction,since it binds several things together one may want to
distinguish. Since the number of alerts is reasonable, I'm in favour of
having one seting per alert rather than introducing categories.
