I have the same problem with Linux Mint 8 x64, but I also had it in
Linux Mint 7 x32. My drive has 400 GB free space, but back in time seems
to be deleting snapshots randomly.
I have just disabled smart "older than" which was set to 10 years and
smart remove. Will see if that helps.

2009-12-06 00:00:00
2009-12-07 00:00:00
2009-12-11 11:31:00
But no other times. I do Daily snapshots and DO NOT have smart remove on.

This is all I have (ran command today) that showed any instances of
"backintime" in the files listed by "ls /var/log/sys*"
/var/log/syslog/var/log/syslog.2.gz /var/log/syslog.4.gz
/var/log/syslog.6.gz
/var/log/syslog.1 /var/log/syslog.3.gz /var/log/syslog.5.gz
/var/log/syslog.7.gz

Just noticed that the above info is from the day we ran the command
manually

I'd like to see logs where it decide to remove snapshots so I can try to
understand why.

Strange, now that we have run this manually it seems to be working

Strange, in the output it does not tries to remove snapshots.
Even more I don't see why it is not logged in your syslog.
Do you have older syslog files ?
