8 May 2017, from 3 to 5 p.m. for the OFO Shorebird Celebration in

There is an EBird photo of a Laughing Gull at Ashbridges Bay early this
morning, Saturday, that was reported as a Franklin's but it is different
obviously from the Franklin's I reported earlier and has been here all
afternoon. Heads up everyone. Flooded Woodbine Beach is the place to watch.

Today's outing was OFO's 26th annual field trip to the Carden Alvar. In
ideal weather, our group of 37 tallied 90 species by walking Wylie Road in
the morning and visiting other birding sites in the afternoon. We saw many
of the target birds including superb views of Loggerhead Shrike,

We can now see that this is a first summer Black-legged Kittiwake. Earlier it
was sleeping, poor angle and not in good light. Now it's perched on one of the
yellow boat ties giving good views.

A Wilson's Phalarope is on the flooded beach. It was found earlier by Lynn
Pady. It flew away but has returned. Other Shorebirds include Sanderlings,

Willie D’Anna just spotted the juvenile Black-legged Kittiwake in the raft of
resting Bonaparte’s Gulls between American and Horseshoe Falls, Niagara Falls.
Also Peregrine just flew through. Lots of Gulls on River including Glaucous,
Kumlien’s, Thayer’s, Lesser Black-backed, thousands of Bonapar
Betsy Potter first spotted the Little Gulls here at Queenston Boat Launch. We
have 3 adults. Also 2 adult Bald Eagles in tall Eagle pine on Ontario side.
Note parking is at a premium down here with boats and trailers. There is an
upper parking lot. Access from Dumfries.
At least 8 Black Vulture
4 adult males and 1 immature male or female. The best spot to view them is from
opposite Greenhouse and just north of Toronto Hydro building. There’s a cluster
of rocks in middle of river and that’s where they are now.

Luc Fazio called to say that he just refound the Tufted Duck in a small flock
of about 50 scaup off Elmwood. This is east of Hurontario. So it’s still
around. The main flock of scaup has been off Ben Machree the last few days.

Access either from west side off West Shore Blvd or east at foot of Liverpool

Another King Eider seen from bridge over Duffins Creek, Rotary Park, Ajax at
same time Charmaine Anderson said she was looking at the Frenchman’s Bay King
Eider. You can also come down the west side of Corner Marsh on Frisco Road and
walk east just a short distance. In with Long-tailed Ducks.

The male Barrow’s is still at East Point Park in Scarborough exactly where John
Brett reported it yesterday at the “Point”. It was with several male Common

Today, Eleanor Beagan and I birded the Carden Alvar. We saw Loggerhead
Shrikes at these locations: two in the pasture on the east side of Wylie
Road opposite bluebird box 10; two north of the corral at the Cameron Ranch
parking lot, one on McNamee Road and two on Shrike Road.

Today, Sunday 4 May 2014, there was an excellent selection of shorebirds at
Hillman Marsh in the shorebird cell, which is managed specially for spring
shorebirds. Highlights late this afternoon were:

Most of the smaller gulls took off in the direction of Hillman Marsh, and the
first summer Franklin's flew too. There are still a lot of gulls left. The best
spot to view the gulls is on Mersea Road 21 (not Road 2) opposite where the
Smith's Longspurs were.

At 8:20 p.m. on Tuesday 20 May 2014, a Yellow Rail
started ticking in the Sedge Wren Marsh on Wylie Road on the east side about 10
metres north of the yellow bridge. Eleanor Beagan and I walked the road and
heard another Yellow Rail 100 metres farther north when the original rail was
ticking clos
Between 5:30 and 9:30 a.m. 1226 Whimbrels migrated past Whimbrel Point in
Colonel Sam Smith Park, Toronto. They came in from Lake Ontario in flocks
ranging in size from 5 to 210, vocalizing as they flew.
Also seen 350 Dunlin and 30 Semipalmated Sandpipers.
We counted 81 migrating Common Loons.
About 60 participants enjoyed OFO's 23th annual birding trip to the Carden
Alvar. The first trip in 1992 was led by Ron Pittaway who assisted with
today's trip. Today we recorded a respectable 90 species including many of
Carden's specialty birds such as Loggerhead Shrike, Sedge Wren, Upland
Sandpi
Today I saw a Ruddy Turnstone at Sibbald Provincial Park on Lake Simcoe near
Sutton. Seems late for a spring migrant on this first day of summer. It
could be a failed breeder and early fall migrant. Reports indicate a very
