What does "vssadmin list shadows" show on the windows box?
Is there something in the Windows System log regarding vss?

So vssadmin seems to work co

If you are on a 64-bit OS, make sure you're using the 64-bit client.
While backing up files will work even with the 32-bit client, VSS won't.
