I find Unity approach to multiple virtual desktops extremely half-hearted:
it just provides the option to used them and an icon which you can't remove
from the bar.
Unity could use virtual desktop in a transparent way:
1-Don't show icon if only a desktop is being used.

IMHO this is a case of creating a very real problem by means of fixing a
very theoretical one. I find *consistency* a well over-used concept: one can
try to force consistent behaviour between any two given elements in a web of

I think it is an interesting solution. I suggested before something a bit
more radical: that every application when open, would create its own virtual
workspace. To do this only for maximised applications is also, I think, a
good idea.
