I think the description of what shutting down does (e.g. "all applications will be closed") belongs in the tooltip for the shut down command. The dialog itself is not the place for that information -- it should show only what you need to know, that is 1) you have an option to cancel the shut down,

A related suggestion -- it seems to make sense to me that if someone clicks shut down on the session applet and then closes the lid of their laptop it makes sense to start the shutdown immediately. Apologies if this is already the case, I don't have a working laptop currently, and I didn't get any

I really like this original design. Most of the other proposed solutions strike me as a little clunky or overly complicated. The thing is to strike a balance between protecting inexperienced users and irritating experienced users who know what they are doing. I think this design does so. However,
