Folks keep bring up the topic of a Unity Tweak Tool.
It is being worked on, and it is currently almost ready for release.

would need to have a warning explaining "Oy, you
can break your system like this." the first time you ran it, similar to the way
the Synaptic package manager did.

Hello Brandon,
This is something that has been discussed before - it'd be better to create
a "system tweak tool" that handles everything - think ccsm, gnome-tweak-tool
and ubuntu tweak all in one.

The Package Managerâ„¢.
As such it's looking for software (application) names, not package names.
My two cents, take it for what it's worth.

Keep in mind that this is a GNOME program we're talking about here -
gnome-appearance-properties.
So this might not be suited for Ayatana, you might want to consider
presenting this to the folks over at gnome.

It's all about consistency. The way it is right now, we are "consistently
inconsistent".

Ok, so reading through the thread, we all agree it's necessary - someone just
needs to write it and present it for peer review and (hopefully) eventual
adoption.

However, It'd be seen by many as "too Apple-like". Not that that is a bad
thing, but it's something to consider.

I have to agree - the BUB ("Big Ubuntu Button") was a surprise, and I have
to agree with what you're saying here.
With that being said, I like suggestion #4 the most - it makes it a little
more obvious.

Nicely done. I like it. If someone can add a "feature request bug
report", I'd mark myself as being affected.

Ah right. I agree that it could be more visible - but I'm not sure how
many users would use something like that. You have to balance features
with "How many users are actually going to use this thing?"

The issue is that you have to strike the happy middle ground where its fast
enough to be usable, but slow enough to be noticeable.

Maybe having this as a "Theme" for the Unity desktop would be a decent
workaround? I'm thinking out loud here.

And in my experience (as a Netbook user), it's easier and better to run
everything fullscreen - on a 10" Netbook, there's not much space. So my Natty
launcher is on autohide.

If it's set to autohide in CCSM, you can get it to pop up again by hitting the
Super key. (Windows Key). Is that what you're talking about?
