s me a bit stumped as to what is going on. Since no other mouse
functions are affected, I can only assume it's an awesome issue. Can
anyone help?
(I'm running awesome 3.4.15 on Ubuntu 13.10, btw.)

be problematic.
The only solution I see is to define tag pairs in your rc.lua and then
write your own function that will run on every tag change and activate the
other member of a pair.
