The built-in functions are interesting,
http://gcc.gnu.org/onlinedocs/gcc/AVR-Built_002din-Functions.html ,
especially __builtin_avr_insert_bits() which lets you do arbitrary bit
ordering and substitutions. Definitely worth a look.
