but what about the others? in particular, automake tells me to add
AC_PROC_CC to configure.in, but if i do that, autoconf complains:
It's AC_PROG_CC, not AC_PROC_CC ;)

You put in AC_PROC_CC, when it's supposed to be AC_PROG_CC. The original
error message had it spelled correctly, but the second one shows the
incorrect spelling.

i'm trying to follow the "simple example, start to finish" from the
automake manual

and it's not working out.
