should there be two tests, one for "POSIX"
and another for "strerror"? If this is the case or if we are checking
just for POSIX, is there a POSIX function that could be
substituted for "strerror"?

is the 3 hours the 2.52 version takes to execute its own "gmake check".
Most of the time seems to spent in `gm4' followed by `nawk'.
