Thank you for you response about my questions on the changes
to AC_REQUIRE and AC_CHECK_TYPE. I had already read the documentation
that you refer to before I sent my email. What I was looking for were
*reasons* for the change, by which I mean something other than one
person's opin

I've just uploaded Autoconf 2.52b (for Autoconf 2.52a was broken, of
course...).
It might seem a bit premature, but recently there have been dramatical
changes in Autoconf:
1. The package layout has completely changed
This is in order to make some room for future M4 packages, such as
