Besides it took a very long time trying to install openbsd on it,
see it fail then spending long time re-flashing it with freebsd.

and root and swap on sd card.
Did you try everything on emmc? Perhaps, it makes sense
to try to do it your way, though I am wary of sd cards wear and tear.
