realtime-safe. Then alsa should just see the hardware-independent
JACK-interface.

One idea: Is your jack a combined RCA/stereo jack? If so, windows might have
some code to switch between the two. But ALSA doesn't properly recognise, when
no jack is in.

standard output. I don't know, if PulseAudio completely block the ALSA ports.
If not, you might even have luck, by configuring your default output to be
pure ALSA.

some scripts, which rely on the cards, being where they are. (I can only do it
from the software side, since I'm blind, so BIOS is out of the question).
He has two PCI cards, one onboard and an M-Audio Delta 1010 LT. Any ideas?

and most audio apps support it. Besides, for simple listening or recording,
there is an alsaplugin, which works for me, since I still have a few apps,
which don't understand JACK. And JACK should be part of every distro nowadays.

I'd treally try the pcm-device thing, because mplayer seemed to be picky
about formats of the audio-files and supported soundcard formats. This seems
to be a special problem with alsa. As you experienced oss is no dificulty as
well as jack.

nicest way to do it, is - I guess - jack. Using jack makes it all
easier, for you can start all your clients and connect them manually (if you
wish) to i/o ports of your soundcard. So unless i9t is necessary, try to use
jack instead of alsa.

Sorry, I know it's bad, practice, replying to oneself. But I solved it.
There seem to have been a lot of bugs around 1.0.14 in the alsa-lib. I had
to fix the ./configure script, or better configure.in.
so if anyone's interested, that's the solution.

T-depth/samplingrate should meet your requirements perfectly. Btw.: The
reasonable lowlatency is mostly due to my system. A better PC than mine
(1.8GHz CPU, average Harddisk, DDR-RAM) should really get you 64-128 periods
latency with JACK.

1. You could create a .asoundrc in your home-dir or the equivalent in /etc.

Yes the audigy2 is supported. But only a little bit. Like playback works and
recording also can work. But there's still something todo. that what Takashi
tells me. :-)
