On the mentioned laptop (Acer Travelmate B115 with Realltek ALC283) I
have the problem that when I plug in a headset, it is only recognized as
a headphone and the external mic is not working.
I have been searching the net now for days and would appreciate your
help a lot!

I'm using alsa 1.0.28 (lib and utils). Everything works fine so far, i.e.
stereo output through speakers and headphone as well as S/PDIF and all
possible capturing.
According to my mainboard manual, the codec supports 5.1 (analog) surround by
using the rear "line out" jack (for rear surround)
