Well, not as interesting as you may have hoped. I reverted the file and applied
the new patch. The only output in kern.log is:

hi,
how can I switch the output mode for my via8235 based board to surround
output, so I can get 6 channel output on the 3 jacks instead of line in and
mic in. It seems that I have to enable a "smart 5.1", but there's no switch
or something like that anywhere...
any hints?
