I am trying to install ALSA on my machine (Fedore Core 5, linux kernel
2.6.17-1.2174_FC5smp) but when running make for alsa-driver-1.0.13 I got a
bunch of error-messages:

You're probably better off doing a "yum update" -- among other things
that will pull in a more r

It doesn't need any parameters, just "yum update" and say "y" when
prompted. You can just update the kernel and alsa stuff ("yum update

but now I still cannot play any audio-file. I get an error whan trying to
cat a sound file to /dev/dsp:
cat sound.au > /dev/dsp
bash: /dev/dsp: Device or resource busy

If you want stereo sound to be played on the two front channels only,
you can just use the "front" or the "plug:surround51" device. The first
has two only channels - the ones on the front - so it only plays stereo,
