That first command gives me no output, just returns back to the
localhost prompt. I'm guessing it's not in use by anything?

AFAIK '/sbin/fuser -v /dev/dsp'.

drivers, I added the suggested lines to modules.conf, and I have gone in
to alsamixer and unmuted everything except headphones, and turned the
volume sliders up
