Then you have some customized ALSA configuration whose default device
does not allow selection of the card. "plughw:1" should work, but your
default device prob
ot; option.
But it doesn't on my EEE 901 running Ubuntu 9.04!

This message doesn't tell anything useful.
Does "arecord -D default
e without problems,
but no recording.
Not sure what to try next,
as I've already re-installed Ubuntu once,
to try and fix the problem, to no avail.

First try to see if anything sees this sound card.
First try kmix
you should see two tabs, one for the intel and the other the usb card. Open
the usb tab.
Now look for capture devices. Do you see anything?
Go into settings and see if some are hidden, and have kmix display them.
