In addition to my post of 6th May - I ought to have said that I removed
pulse audio (which worked fine btw) just to be sure, but it didn't help.

I'm using alsa version 1.0.13 and 1.0.11rc4 and sound card 'Creative
Labs SB Audigy LS' (module ca0106).
Sound output works fine (I hear everything).
Is possible to record some sound using this card? I tried various
settings, and I always
receive silent.
