Sorry to follow up on my own post, but I thought this might be relevant too.
When I type in "asoundconf list", I get this:
I82801DBICH4
Device
Those look like strange designations for sound cards. Is this in any way
a symptom of the problem?

if aplay lists the device, aplay should be able to play over it: What
do you get, if you do "aplay -Dplughw:1 somefile.wav" on the command
