Check if xmms can play sounds muted. If xmms don't puts any error means
that you can the correct audio module.
Then check if all sound levels are muted (alsamixer).
Check if your modprobe.conf are similar to this one:

In xmms application, you must choose "control volume by soft" in options
==> preferences ==> config (when alsa plugin is select). ==> control
volume by soft.
xmms have volume controlled by soft.

I have the same problem. I can use multiple mplayer sessions, with xmms;
but when the program use dsp device as default, the dmix doesn't work.
Xmms setting in "default" can be solve the problem with mplayer or
another program that can be use alsa plugin.

I can't play simultaneous sounds with xmms (mplayer, or another program)
and games emulated with wineX (like counter strike, GTA Vice City).
Has someone use simultaneous sound: playing mp3 files and playing
Counter Strike or another emulated game at same time with this card?
