Having another go at getting this to work:
- pulse audio is uninstalled
- I can play music, videos etc no problem
- when I talk into the mic, I can hear the output on the speakers
but:
arecord -d 10 -f cd -t wav -D hw:0 foobar.wav
gives me:
Recording WAVE 'foobar.wav' : Signed 16 bi
't sure if you had more than one

I also do not see this control with alsamixer and the only thing I see
on my similar (non-working) system with "amixer -c 0" is:

People,
I can use xine etc to play audio and video files happily but I have had
limited success trying to record audio from the microphone. At one
point I could hear sound from the microphone coming out of the speakers
and after juggling krec, kmix and the audio manager was able to play a
