I am using the latest alsa (1.0.17) and Fedora 8
on a Dell Vostro 1400 laptop.
The only problem I still have is the digital microphone,
which sounds really too low. When I select the digital
input in alsamixer, the capture volume does not make any
difference anymore.

I think you mean btaudio.
But it is not loaded.
lsmod shows nothing.
Where should I look?

It works in kernel 2.6.12. After that, /dev/dsp2 and
/dev/audio2 are no longer created, although the module is
loaded with no error at all (it does not matter if "load_all"
is being used or not).
