Make sure nothing is trying to access the soundcard, do a killall esd and
killall artsd.

You need to use an .asoundrc file. The syntax and parameters are a closely
guarded secret, but you might look around the Alsa

1) Is CD playing? (plug headphones into the CD player front jack)
2) Do you have the cable from the back of the CD player plugged in?
3) Is it a digital or analog cable?

There is a script included in the alsa-driver source called "alsasound" I
believe. Copy that to /etc/init.d then put in symbolic links to add it
under rc3.d and rc5.d and rc6.d . The scripts linked there are evaluated
in alphabetical order, so place it towrds the end and you'll be OK...
