I compiled alsa-0.9.2 on VIA KT400 (also GigaByte mb) and it worked as
fine as on my system.

I have GigaByte GA-7VA-C with VIA 8235. I use alsa-0.9.2 (compiled by me
from Debian packages. It works just perfectly (I had only change rate
for hw:0,0).

I have motherboard based on VIA KT-333 with RealTek ALC-650 audio codec.
I've started using ALSA since 0.9.0 and it works perfectly. I am using
via82xx ALSA mod

Maybe you don't have enough rights to use those devices? Add the user to
audio group (adduser username audio).
