Problem solved :-)
In ~/.xmms/config I changed one line:
[ALSA}
pcm_device=hw:0,0 line from linda worked in song
pcm_device=default did not work in song
I don't know why this worked but xmms is working fine now.

I built the alsa drivers and libs and utils and installed.
Put the lines in /etc/modules.conf from the howto for my
card, everything went without errors except when I try
to run alsamixer I get the following error and I can't unmute
the sound. I'm pretty sure the card's working cause I get

here some reason I should not be able to use
gcc-0.96-85? (3) if not, then which gcc version should I use?
And I suppose, question (4): should I not be using the supposed stable
version at all, but the beta version (0.9-x)? I'm using kernel 2.4.x.
