I get frequent underruns when playing very short wav files with aplay.
Is there a way to avoid this? Would a different input format be better?
I tried using the --buffer-time setting up to 10 but it did not seem
to help.

Is there any way to control the volume of two sources when mixing using
'dmix' apart from having volume control within the source apps
themselves?

turn off this routing completely, and then turn it on
but route it to a specific output based on other data. So, I might
route it to channel12 and then stop it and then later route it to
channel34. Is this possible at all?

It kind of works... I can play two MP3s at the same time to 'channel12',
and I can play one MP3 to 'channelALL' and hear it on all output
channels. But, if I play one MP3 on 'channel12' and another on
'channelALL

saw that my card has a spdif output but I don't even undertand what
format the output is in and what I could connect it to? I'm used to
digital audio outputs either being optical our coaxial, but with only
one RCA-type connector (for the coaxial version at least).
Just curious...

send one audio source (festival speech
engine) to all outputs (i.e. channel12, channel34, channel56, and
channel78) at the same time as MP3s may be playing separately on each
channel...
I hope this doesn't put me back into my original high-CPU dema

previously all outputs sharing a mixer? What does sharing a mixer do
for you?
And it seems that 'dshare' just allows the two channels to be used as a
pair and that is all? I can't play more than one stream to the same
output device using dshare, which

I think it would help if somebody could explain to me (or point me to a
web resource) about how you select an output in ALSA. I know how to do
it with 'aplay' since it has a special command-line option, but I'm
doing speech with the festival speech engine and the output just goes to
the first outp

2) Must be able to play to any of the four stereo outputs of my sound
card.
A big plus is if the program can control the output volume directly so
that I can mix in speech over the music when necessary.
Question -- when mpg123 uses esd, is it basically using the OSS
compatibi
therboard? the msp3410 process takes up CPU time even when no audio
is being generated...
