I'm using alsa 1.0.28 (lib and utils). Everything works fine so far, i.e.
stereo output through speakers and headphone as well as S/PDIF and all
possible capturing.
According to my mainboard manual, the codec supports 5.1 (analog) surround by
using the rear "line out" jack (for rear surround)

When I compiled the alsa-utils package, I had a different error, but
maybe they both have the same reason: alsa-driver (and alsa-lib?) has to
be compiled and installed befor you can compile the alsa-utils package.

If everything worked fine, you only have to restart your computer (well,
you don't have to, but it's easier than restarting alsa and loading the
new drivers manually).

I don't know wether this works, it's maybe just an idea. Look at "lsusb
-v". In the first line of your device, it says "Bus xxx Device yyy:
...". Maybe you can use the values xxx and yyy with udev to give the two
devices unique names - as long as they don'

That puts the avarage of the front and left input channels to the center
and lfe output channels instead of the sum of these input channels. I
*guess*, that that's rather what you want to do, otherwise the center
can be too loud.

you can configure it in a way that it uses one playback device for music
and another one for TV. I know that with Amarok, you can select
different devices for mono, stereo, 4.0 and 5.1 sound sources.

As far as I understand it, "theoretically", it should work both ways.
You still have to do it the way that the dmix device is the last device,
because the dmix plugin requires a hardware slave (AFAIK). It can't pass
the sound data to a virtual device like softvol.

I also did an upgrade to kernel 2.6.4 and KDE 3.2.1 (on SuSE 9.0
though). Was quite some hassle and it only worked after I disabled the
KDE sound daemon (artsd) and stopped all KDE mixer app
..
somewhere i found, that this device /dev/snd/pmcC0D3p is used for
digital output, but i can`t use it.
I hav no idea, what i can do to get this thing running..

i have a single coaxial line from my card to the Amp. It is plugged into
the "Digital/analog Jack"
The alternative analog discrete 7.1 connection works fine, but i want my
denon AMP to decode DTS, DD and PCM.
