This sounds very much like what happened on my machine, for no known
reason (except for maybe changing the USB port)

That's good news indeed! At least we know it's not completely broken.

Sorry, you're right! Konqueror opened the patch in a way that didn't
show anything about usbquirks...

Your patch misses the additions to usbquirks.h.
Try the patch I posted to alsa-user (change the product id to fit the FTU):

What playback software are you using? Have you correctly connected

Have you checked the DSP mixer settings? Unfortunately, you need Windows
or a Mac for that. (I hope to find some time for implementing Alsa mixer
support , soon. )

BTW, the current thread title is misleading, we just have basic support
for the FTU.

The FTU(8R) doesn't export any descriptors for the mixer and the DSP
unit. Hence the driver doesn't know that they exi

No it doesn't. The patch Gabriele posted works for the Fast Track Ultra,

I don't think that *this* patch will make it into the main code base. It
has flaws, e.g. 44100 Hz don't work, there's no mixer support although
the mixer seems to behave mostly like a standard USB mixer.
So before the Alsa developers adopt it in the main line some things have
to be worked out.
Since some people asked offline, here's the patch for the Fast Track

Hi,
I'm currently trying to get a M-Audio Fast Track Ultra 8R working. The
device has the USB-ID 0763:2081.
I applied the patch from Clemens Ladisch[1], written for the "Fast Track
Ultra" (w/o 8R), but changed the USB ID to match the "8R".
Now the device is essentially working, i.e. I'm gettin
