I have the same, Solo-1, slack 8, kernel 2.4.16. I hate to ask this, but
did you also unmute? Look for MM at the top of any channels in alsamixer.
Also you might try 0.9.x, I'm using 0.9.0beta10 which works perfectly,
but good luck getting the gameport to function. I've been battling that

Mabey you need to use a mixer (alsamixer, gamix) to set your capture to line1.
Unless that thinkpad has multiple dsp's, line1 isn't going to be a seperate
/dev/dsp?. You probably have only /dev/dsp0.
