Usually you get compilation errors when you try to compile alsa with gcc version , different from what was used to compile your kernel. Standard RH7.3 kernel (an all updates) was compiled with gcc-2.96, while you may have upgraded gcc since then to 3.1/3.2. If so, install compat-gcc296 package f
