Usually you get compilation errors when you try to compile alsa
with gcc version , different from what was used to compile your kernel.
Standard RH7.3 kernel (an all updates)
was compiled with gcc-2.96, while you may have
upgraded gcc since then to 3.1/3.2. If so, install compat-gcc296 package

I have ASUS A7V266E with built in
C-Media Electronics Inc CM8738 (rev 16) audio chip.
I had no problems using alsa-0.9.0rc1 cmipci driver.
However my attempt to upgrade to alsa-0.9.0rc5 and later
rc6 caused problems.
Loading of module (with /etc/rc.d/init/alsasound start) causes

Apperently not, kernel is compiled with (gcc version 2.96 2731 (Red
Hat Linux 7.3 2.96-110)) and now I used gcc-3.1 :(
