(indeed it is a Dolby Digital 5.1/ ac3)
The last one surprises me because I have connected the soundcard to a coaxial
input, not an optical. And how is vlc aware of the various devices?

my sound card is a Realtek ALC888 onboard Chip.
I want to use arecord to record the sound by another programme, eg. mplayer
using alsa as output device.
I wonder if this works at all. Should it?
Every time I make something like:
arecord -f cd -D hw:0,0 test.wav
or
arecord -f dat -

Finally I got my externel midi device working with my

The only method that worked with me was the following:
1. Recompiling alsa with snd-via82xx and(!) snd-mpu401
driver
2. modifiying the alsa-part in the modules.conf.

stuff:
I tried to connect my keyboard with the
midi port of my soundcard (via 8233 chipset).
But neihter rosegarden or pmidi recognizes
something apart from fluidsynth.
