First of all, I would like to thank all those responsible for ALSA. It's a
great project.
I have kernel 2.4.20, on-board via8235 and pci als4000, clean compile of
alsa-0.9.0rc8a from cvs. I can't get SPDIF to work when I try 'aplay -Dspdif
foo.wav'. It spews out this error:

hear various sound file formats, watch movies with xine, play quakeIII,etc,

Hi. Thanks for your info on enabling midi for vt8233. When I copied your
addons in my modules.conf, snd-mpu401 won't load. When I tried 'insmod
snd-mpu401 port=0x0300 irq=7', there's a 'device not found' error. What I
did was I unloaded alsa modules first. I wrote a script (soundon.sh) like
hi to you all. i, too, have via8235 southbridge, ac97 codec, but i'm using
RH7.3 w/custom kernel 2.4.18. try running alsaconf script from tools or
utils dir of alsa source. that's the easiest way. it'll automatically
configure your card and modules.conf.
