Have you looked thru all the consoles with ctrl-alt-Fn to see if the error
messages were still on some console?

A bit off-topic but...
- örssing the scrolllock key will usually freeze the screen output.
- With the screen application you can eiihter scroll back announcemets
that were scrolled out from the screen or take a snapshot of current
screen.

AFAIK PulseAudio can be configured to do this automatically, even when
a stream is currently
