Bill, thanks for the reply. I am also able to open both arecord and aplay at
same time, but in my software if I try to access the card in playback mode, I am
unable to open it again in capture mode. Was hoping it was going to be
straightforward, but maybe there is a catch when trying to open the
As far as I can tell it is just like opening reading and writing at the same
time. For example, I can run arecord and aplay on the same card at the same
time without doing anything special ( this may of course depend on the card--
if the card cannot support duplex, nothing you do will work).

I use linux and xine-ui-0.99.5 .
xine uses xine-lib-1.1.17 .
xine-lib uses alsa.
1. I insert a music CD in the tray.
2. I call xine.
3. I press the CD playback button.
No underrun audible.
