Up to and including kernel 2.6.29 (which had alsa-1.0.18a) my speakers
connected to the line-out jack could directly play music from an audio
source connected to the line-in jack without any user programs being
involved. Starting with 2.6.30-rc1 this no longer works and I have to use
somet
to send a signal directly to your soundcard you
can use aplay.
first try:

the output will something like this:

Is there a reason why you use an older version of alsa? (1.0.19)
Because there is a newer pre-compiled version (1.0.20) of alsa available
via apt-get. Or try to compile the newest version (1.0.21)
