Rear mic works fine, front mic doesn't work when used as a capture device. It
works if I turn up the playback control for the mic (that is, I can hear myself
talking), but if I use it as a capture device, it doesn't work.

It might just be broken in 64 bit kernel perio
Success! I managed to install it without a hitch on 2.6.27-7-generic kernel,
though I also followed the step posted here

Well yes I did run depmod before that and then got the error. When compiling,
it used '/usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.27-9-generic'. However, for Ubuntu when I
check my hardware drivers (System->Administration->Hardware Drivers) X-Fi
Driver is listed as activated but not currently in use. Also,
THANKS FOR YOUR PROMPT RESPONSE AND HELP!
Your card isn't HDA, it's AC97. Try snd-intel8x0 instead.
Thanks! I will. I think this is the problem. I attach the things, which
were asked by Nigel, but do not spend too much time on it as I think the
snd-intel8x0 will solve it.

Well, this took a while And I guess I gave alot of grief to
some of my new friends at this site (special thanks, Mark Constable).
After many fruitless hours of trying to incorporate my Tascam US122
under a 64 bit version of Fedora 10, I think I have semi-solved the problem.

Hi,
I am running debian/lenny.
I have an integrated sound card:
00:1e.2 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation
82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 03)
It was recognized by the system but did not work.
So I installed the alsa-driver, lig, utils as described at
Oh, I misunderstood. You should look in to the programs Jim
mentioned. I've never tried to do that either.

But this means on the other hand:
I cannot record what I play?!
Kind regards

Playing should not interfere with recording. I do the same thing with
similar chipset. Make sure you go in to alsamixer, hit tab, and use
spacebar and up and down to turn one of the capture volumes on and up,
and set the capture source using up and down over on the right where
it says line or mic

Hello,
my sound card is a Realtek ALC888 onboard Chip.
I want to use arecord to record the sound by another programme, eg. mplayer
using alsa as output device.
I wonder if this works at all. Should it?
Every time I make something like:
arecord -f cd -D hw:0,0 test.wav
or
arecord -f dat -
