Exclude 'mplayer' first, use the official 'aplay' to check ALSA.

problem. However, when I do a modprobe -f em28xx_alsa to force the

Alsa from source will likely install to:
/lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/sound/
Which means you likely have two versions:
/lib/modules/`uname -r`/ubuntu/sound/
find /lib/modules/
