have you tried to change the rate in /etc/asound.conf to 44100?
Because now the music has to be up-sampled from 44100Hz to 48000Hz
so there will be a quality change.

Hey Eric,
here is the solution I use with the Audigy 2 ZS sound card:
In ~/.asoundrc or asound.conf write only this line
pcm.!default spdif
restart Alsa
Now all the "default sounds" will go to the spdif output.
hope this will fix your problem
