Ok, after reading Jim McCloskey's posts on the UA-1EX here is what I
tried (keep in mind I am still a Linux newbie somewhat):
UA-1EX with Advanced Driver Switch = OFF
System is Mandriva 2007.0 PWP, kernel 2.6.17-6mdv running on a Compaq
nx9010 laptop.
# modprobe snd-usb-audio

anyone know what problems or benefits disabling acpi has ? any side-effects
for apic or xt-pic? any differences with 32 bit v 64 bit ?

Has anyone gotten sound working on a Gateway mx6454 laptop or similar
model? It shows up as an ATI when it is a SigmaTel. I try to configure
using yast and it says it failed due to possible IRQ conflict. I also

I think I need a USB sound card. Turns out there are some nice USB 2.0
cards that are geared up for musicians.

I'm setting a Fedora Core 6 server up to record an audio input, and I'm
having a problem where the arecord program hangs randomly, rather than
running to the specified (-d flag) duration. Hanging can occur at any point,
but rarely can I make it to 120 seconds before the program hangs. It
