Problem is: Most USB 2.0 cards aren't supported by ALSA yet, AFAIK.
So you need to stick with USB 1.1, which is enough for stereo.
It'd recommend the Terratec Phase 26 or the Edirol

I've Hercules Fortissimo II record sound from my MIC. Microphone
works as when I choose microphone as the recording source from
alsamixer I can hear sound thru the loudspears. Problem is that I can't
record this sound. Gnome-sound-recorder just hangs on recording or

i've here a m-audio 1010lt with an ice1712 chip.
on this card, there is no pcm mixer channel per default, but i think it
should be possible to add on in the .asoundrc file.
the problem is, that the documentation about the ctl.NAME is verry barely.
